Dermboy’s Message

Even a hero like Dermboy can’t always be there to defend the family from Rojo. But he can teach them some valuable lessons about sun safety. They learn that they need to apply sunscreen before exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, even on cloudy days; that clothing and hats can provide extra protection; and that the sun can burn just as badly in cool weather.

Hazel, Wayne, and their parents now have the knowledge they need to keep their skin safe and healthy. Rojo will certainly keep trying to sabotage their vacation plans, but now they know how to fight back — thanks to Dermboy!

The Origin of Dermboy

Dermboy is the creation of Dr. Brian Matthys, a board-certified dermatologist practicing in the Kansas City area. When he decided to specialize in dermatology, friends started calling him Dermboy. The nickname stuck, and he soon dreamed up a superhero fighting against his sunburn-inducing nemesis, Rojo the Lobster. In collaboration with children’s author Scott Emmons and illustrator Renee Andriani, he has now brought the character to life in “Dermboy Saves Vacation.”

Our Mission

As a dermatologist for over 20 years (as well as a former lifeguard!), Dr. Matthys is passionate about creatively teaching generations to keep their skin healthy and protect it against sun damage. His book uses a fun, interactive story to help children and adults alike to
“find a win for their skin.”
